Design Overview: The Harmony of Eclectic and Japandi Styles
Hey friend. Home should be more than just a place where we exist; it should be a reflection of our story, a sanctuary of comfort, and a space that feels just right. For my apartment, I sought a design that embodied tranquility, balance, and a bit of edge—that’s where the fusion of Eclectic and Japandi styles came in.

Eclectic interior design is all about curated contrast. It allows for different aesthetics, time periods, and textures to coexist in a way that feels intentional rather than chaotic. It embraces variety while maintaining cohesion. Japandi, on the other hand, is a hybrid of Japanese and Scandinavian design principles. It thrives on minimalism, function, and the beauty of imperfection, with a deep appreciation for organic materials and muted, earthy tones.

By merging these two styles, I created a space that feels calm and deliberate, yet fresh and contemporary. To add an extra layer of depth, I incorporated trendy and modern elements that keep the design from feeling too traditional. But the real magic of this apartment lies in its tonal contrast: two opposing palettes define separate spaces, ensuring that each area has its own distinct personality while still flowing harmoniously from one to the next.
The Power of Color, Texture, and Pattern
Color, texture, and pattern are the silent storytellers of interior design. They set the mood, create visual interest, and ensure that a space feels both dynamic and cohesive. In my apartment, I used these elements to establish the balance between warm and cool tones, differentiating spaces while still connecting them through deliberate design choices.

In the living area, I aimed for warmth, coziness, and a sense of organic movement. The base colors—ivory and beige—create a soft, welcoming foundation. Green serves as the focal color, grounding the space and tying it to nature. To keep things feeling light and fresh, I incorporated white oak as the primary wood choice. Finally, pops of orange and red inject energy and movement, adding a vibrant contrast that keeps the space from feeling too subdued.

In contrast, the bedroom and bathroom (private spaces) flip this palette on its head. Here, white dominates as the base color, fostering a serene and airy atmosphere. Blue takes center stage as the focal color, bringing a cool, calming presence. Black and grey metals add a contemporary, structured feel, while touches of green and light-colored wood ensure continuity with the warmer spaces.

The key to making this dual-tone approach work? Strategic use of texture and pattern. Soft linens, plush rugs, and smooth ceramics enhance the feeling of comfort. Woven elements and subtle, nature-inspired patterns bring depth without overwhelming the space. By layering these materials, I was able to create an apartment that feels not only stylish but also deeply inviting—a true reflection of home.
Space Planning: Making the Most of 378 Square Feet
Space planning is crucial, especially in a studio apartment where every inch counts. My unit is 378 square feet with an open floor plan, meaning the kitchen and living space flow seamlessly together. Two key architectural elements influenced my design:
  • 20-foot ceilings – At 6’2”, I need vertical space for both comfort and aesthetic reasons. High ceilings give the apartment an airy, expansive feel.
  • South-facing window – Living in Northern California, this ensures natural light pours in from sunrise to sunset, a must-have for me.
With these elements in mind, here’s how I laid out my space:
  • Entryway (4’ x 6.5’) – I love a defined entrance, so I sectioned off a mini-mudroom. It features a counter, stool, rug, shoe storage, and mirror, creating a functional drop-zone while keeping dirt out of my no-shoes apartment.
  • Kitchen – Located right off the entrance, the kitchen remains open and streamlined. The only addition here is a bar table with stools, maximizing space while maintaining sightlines.
  • Living Room – This is the heart of the home, so I gave it about half of the available space. A well-sized sofa and secondary seating ensure comfort while entertaining. Since I love natural light, I positioned the furniture to face the south-facing window, making it the focal point of the room.
  • Bedroom (Under the Window) – To maximize efficiency, I placed my queen-size bed against the window with a slim bed frame. A small dresser and nightstands complete this area without overwhelming the space.

Hey Ronnie 🙂 This was a DIY project. I got the wood frames from Ikea and the ribbed panels from Home Depot.

I came from your YouTube channel after seeing a YouTube short about your apartment. I am looking for information on the little coin bank on the console in your entryway.
